Rotoplay’s final 2-Week Frenzy of 2009 is getting ready to take place, and with it one last chance to cash in before everyone turns their undivided attention to fantasy football (if that hasn’t happened already). For the final time this year, let’s take a look at the groupings to help you field the best lineup possible.
(Note: All statistics are as of 9/10)
All-Star 1 – Miguel Cabrera, Manny Ramirez, Alex Rodriguez, Chase Utley, Mark Teixeira, Albert Pujols Ryan Howard
Utley is struggling, and is just 3-for-24 in the month of September with one home run and a lone RBI. And though Teixeira has three long balls, he is also scuffling with a .229 average this month. On the other hand, Rodriguez is hitting .414 in September, but without much power, having hit only one home run. Pujols is ablaze so far this month, lacking in no category. He’s hitting .471 with six home runs and 14 RBIs.
- Games: Cabrera, Utley and Howard are scheduled for 13 games, while Ramirez, Rodriguez, Teixeira and Pujols are scheduled for 12.
- Injury Alert: There are no injury concerns with this group.
All-Star 2 – Hanley Ramirez, Mark Reynolds, Evan Longoria, Kevin Youkilis, Prince Fielder, Carl Crawford, Ryan Braun
Crawford and Reynolds are the only ones having a tough September thus far, as each is hitting below .200 with one home run. Braun is hitting .321 but surprisingly has no home runs and hasn’t driven in one run. Ramirez has been battling a bit of a sore hamstring but has hit .381 with three home runs this month and Longoria is hitting nearly .400 with five homers and 12 RBIs.
- Games: Fielder and Braun have 14 games on their schedule, while Ramirez and Youkilis have 13, and Reynolds, Longoria and Crawford have 12.
- Injury Alert: There are no injury concerns with this group.
Middle Infield 1 – Jimmy Rollins, Brian Roberts, Ian Kinsler, Robinson Cano, Michael Young, Troy Tulowitzki, Derek Jeter
There are a number of players in this group that are having rotten Septembers, including Rollins (.205 batting average), Roberts (.217) and Tulowitzki (.231). Cano and Jeter are each hitting under .280 this month, leaving Kinsler, who’s hitting .343, as the lone player performing exceptionally.
- Games: Rollins, Roberts, Kinsler and Young have 13 game schedules; Cano, Jeter and Tulowitzki have 12 on their docket.
- Injury Alert: Young is out with a hamstring injury and should not be used. Tulowitzki is dealing with a back issue, but should be okay.
Middle Infield 2 –Ben Zobrist, Dan Uggla, Dustin Pedroia , Brandon Phillips, Aaron Hill, Jason Bartlett, Chone Figgins
There are some numbers in this group for the month of September that are uglier than a debate on healthcare reform. The unsightliness is led by Figgins, who is hitting .185 with no home runs, no RBIs and no steals so far in September. Zobrist and Pedroia are also hitting under .200 for the month, while Uggla is at just .207 – albeit with three home runs – and Bartlett is at .219. Hill is hitting .286 but does not have a home run this month either, leaving Phillips, at .313 with one home run, one steal and three doubles, as the best performer so far.
- Games: Only Zobrist and Bartlett have 12 games on their schedule, while the rest have 13.
- Injury Alert: There are no injury concerns with this group.
Corner Infield – Kendry Morales, Adrian Gonzalez, Derrek Lee, Victor Martinez, Joe Mauer, David Wright, Ryan Zimmerman
Morales has been terrific since the All-Star break, but has yet to hit a home run in September, with just four RBIs and an average under .250. Coincidentally, the same numbers apply to Wright. Mauer doesn’t have any bombs either so far this month, and even worse has driven in only two runs, but as you might expect is hitting well, with a .345 average in September. Lee is hitting nearly .400 with five homers on the month, while Martinez actually is hitting .400, though with just one long ball.
- Games: Lee has 14 games scheduled; Morales, Gonzalez and Martinez have 13, and Mauer, Wright and Zimmerman have 12.
- Injury Alert: There are no injury concerns with this group.
Outfield 1 – Adam Dunn, Matt Kemp, Bobby Abreu, Jason Bay, Jacoby Ellsbury, Curtis Granderson, Josh Hamilton
After a blazing August, Kemp is hitting under .175 so far this month, though he does have three steals. Ellsbury has five steals with an average near .300 for September, though he’s obviously a power liability. Dunn is anything but a liability when it comes to power, but oddly, he has yet to go deep in September despite hitting over .300.
- Games: Dunn and Kemp have 12 games on their schedule; the rest have 13.
- Injury Alert: Hamilton is dealing with a pinched nerve in his back that has kept him out of the lineup. His return is up in the air, but even if he’s back by the start of the week, it’s probably best to go in another direction.
Outfield 2 – Andre Ethier, Nelson Cruz, Carlos Lee, Nick Markakis, Grady Sizemore, Ichiro Suzuki, Jayson Werth
Ethier, Lee, Markakis and Werth are each hitting under .275 for the month, but at least Werth has shown some power, with four home runs. Unfortunately, he has just five RBIs to go with those bombs. Suzuki is doing his thing, hitting .333 in September, but with no home runs, no stolen bases and just one run driven in. Cruz, meanwhile, is hitting nearly .400 with two bombs.
- Games: Cruz, Markakis and Werth have a 13 game schedule, and the rest have 12 games.
- Injury Alert: Sizemore is out for the remainder of the season after deciding to have elbow surgery.
Outfield 3 – Alfonso Soriano, Adam Lind, Raul Ibanez, Torii Hunter, Shane Victorino, Michael Bourn, Vladimir Guerrero
Vlad the Impaler has skewered nothing in September, with just three hits and a .125 average on the month while failing to hit a home run and driving in just two. His teammate, Hunter, has no home runs either and is hitting just .207, while Victorino is hitting under .200 with no home runs or RBIs, but with two steals. Bourn has four steals, but it should come as no surprise that he has no home runs and just one RBI this month.
- Games: Only Bourn is scheduled for 12 games; the rest of the group has 13.
- Injury Alert: Soriano is out with a knee injury and should not be used.
Outfield 4 – Ryan Ludwick, Hideki Matsui, Jermaine Dye, Johnny Damon, Vernon Wells, Josh Willingham, Brad Hawpe
There are several players in this group who will want to forget their starts to this month, including Wells (.222 batting average), Willingham (.158), Dye (.136) and especially Hawpe (.095). Damon is faring just a smidge better, hitting .250, but with no home runs or steals and just two RBIs. Matsui has no home runs either so far this month, but is hitting .360, and Ludwick is hitting over .400 with two home runs.
- Games: Wells has 13 games on his schedule, and the rest of the group has 12.
- Injury Alert: There are no injury concerns with this group.
Power Hitter – Lance Berkman, Paul Konerko, Andrew McCutchen, Joey Votto, Aramis Ramirez, David Ortiz, Mike Lowell
Berkman, McCutchen, Ramirez and Votto have each hit under .200 in September, and neither Berkman nor McCutchen have hit a home run. Ortiz isn’t doing much better at .207, and Lowell is at just .238. The only one with an average above that in September is Konerko, who is hitting .333, and he’s also the only player in this group with multiple home runs, having hit three so far this month.
- Games: Ramirez has 14 games on his schedule; Ortiz, Lowell, Votto and McCutchen have 13, while Berkman and Konerko have 12.
- Injury Alert: There are no injury concerns with this group.
Grab Bag – Aubrey Huff, Todd Helton, Brian McCann, Jorge Posada, Chipper Jones, Pablo Sandoval, Hunter Pence
There are some hot hitters in this group, but none of them reside in Atlanta, as both McCann and Jones are hitting under .120 in September. Kung Fu Panda, aka Sandoval, is also having trouble at the plate so far this month, with a .222 average. However, Helton is hitting a robust .345 with eight RBIs and Pence is close to .400 with three home runs and nine RBIs. Posada has the same power numbers as Pence, but with a marginally lower average of .365.
- Games: Only Huff and Sandoval have 13 games on their schedule; the others have 12.
- Injury Alert: There are no injury concerns with this group.
Staff Ace – A.J. Burnett, Zack Greinke, Cole Hamels, Felix Hernandez, Wandy Rodriguez, Justin Verlander, Chad Billingsley
Burnett has struggled in his last five starts, with an ERA over 6.50 and one win. Opposite of that, potential Cy Young winner Greinke has a 1.38 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and nearly 10 strikeouts per nine innings pitched (the highest rate of anyone in this group) over his last five starts, but he plays for the Royals, which unfortunately means he has just two wins to show for his laudable efforts.
- Possible Starts: Burnett, Greinke, Hamels, Rodriguez and Verlander have 3 potential starts, and Hernandez and Billingsley have 2 (Note: starts are subject to change)
- Injury Alert: There are no injury concerns with this group.
Starting Pitcher 1 – Josh Beckett, Chris Carpenter, CC Sabathia, Cliff Lee, Roy Halladay, Dan Haren, Tim Lincecum
No pitcher in baseball is hotter than Carpenter, who is 4-0 in his last five starts with an ERA under 2.00 and an 8.0 K/9 rate. Sabathia is striking out hitters at a higher rate than Carpenter over his last five starts, with an 11.1 K/9 mark, but has an ERA slightly higher than the Cardinals’ ace, at 2.27, to go with three wins. Meanwhile, Beckett is throwing as poorly as he has at any point in the season, and over his last five starts has zero wins, two losses, and an ERA of nearly 8.00.
- Possible Starts: Beckett, Carpenter, Halladay, Haren and Lincecum have 3 potential starts, while Sabathia and Lee have 2.
- Injury Alert: Lincecum was scratched from his last start due to back spasms.
Starting Pitcher 2 – Mark Buehrle, Matt Cain, Yovani Gallardo, Josh Johnson, Jon Lester, Ricky Nolasco, Jared Weaver
Lester has easily been the best performer of this group over his last five starts, with an ERA under 2.50, three wins, no losses, and a K/9 rate over 10. Johnson and Weaver also have three wins in their last five starts, but with two losses apiece and ERAs up over 3.60
- Possible Starts: Cain, Gallardo, Lester, Nolasco and Weaver have 3 possible starts, and Buehrle and Johnson both have 2.
- Injury Alert: There are no injury concerns with this group.
Starting Pitcher 3 –John Danks, Jair Jurrjens, John Lackey, Scott Baker, Randy Wells, James Shields, Carlos Zambrano
Baker is cruising over his last five starts, with four wins and an ERA under 2.40. Jurrjens’ ERA isn’t much higher over his last five trips to the mound, but he has just one win to show for it. Shields has one more win than that, but with an ERA over 5.00. Zambrano is having the most problems over his last five starts, with an ERA of 6.41 and only one victory.
- Possible Starts: Danks, Jurrjens, Lackey, Baker, Wells and Zambrano have 3 possible starts, and Shields has 2.
- Injury Alert: There are no injury concerns with this group.
Starting Pitcher 4 – Jason Marquis, Ted Lilly, Rich Harden, Scott Kazmir, Clayton Kershaw, Max Scherzer, Javier Vazquez
Scherzer is 2-3 with an ERA dangerously close to 5.00 the last five times he’s taken the bump, while Marquis is 2-2 with an ERA over 4.00 and a poor WHIP of 1.42 while striking out just over four batters per nine innings in his last five starts. Kershaw has no victories over his last five starts, while Lilly, Harden, Kazmir and Vazquez each have two. Lilly and Kazmir both have ERAs under 2.50 in that time.
- Possible Starts: Harden and Kershaw (if healthy) have 3 potential starts, and Marquis, Lilly, Kazmir, Scherzer and Vazquez have 2.
- Injury Alert: Kershaw skipped his start on Friday due to soreness in his right (non-throwing) shoulder.
Young Guns –Matt Garza, J.A. Happ, Randy Wolf, Edwin Jackson, Derek Lowe, Joe Blanton, Andy Pettitte
Garza has not secured a single victory over his last five starts, and has an ERA over 4.00 in that time. Lowe has one notch in the win column over his last five efforts, but with an ERA up over 6.00. Pettitte, Wolf and Jackson have each won four of their past five starts, but Wolf is doing it the most impressively, with an ERA of 2.31, a fabulous WHIP of 0.77, and a K/9 rate of 8.2.
- Possible Starts: Happ, Wolf, Lowe and Blanton have 3 potential starts, while Garza, Pettitte and Jackson have 2.
- Injury Alert: There are no injury concerns with this group.
Closers – Jonathan Broxton, Ryan Franklin, Brian Fuentes, Huston Street, Joe Nathan, Jonathan Papelbon, Mariano Rivera
Franklin and Nathan are having difficult Septembers, having each blown a save. Nathan’s ERA for the month is near 10.00, while Franklin’s up over 15.00. Broxton is 5-for-5 in save opportunities, and Rivera is 2-for-2, and neither has allowed a run. Papelbon hasn’t blown a save either and has a 1.69 ERA this month, while Fuentes has one blown save with a 4.50 ERA.
- Games: Papelbon and Fuentes have 13 games on their schedule; the rest of the group has 12.
- Injury Alert: Street has been out with right biceps tendinitis, and may not return to closer’s role immediately upon return.
